The core piece of MianMian's Danmei: The book reviews!
Find your next read, a new favorite and experience my infatuated ramblings about scenes, characters and storylines... (♡ˊ͈ ꒳ ˋ͈)
My book reviews are here to help you choose your next read! If you have something in mind but are not sure if it's what you're looking for or if you just want to get inspiration, this is the place for you! (ദ്ദി˙ᗜ˙)
I was inspired by the fact that I found most recommendations on Instagram, YouTube etc. were either too shallow or too detailed. I wanted to know what the books were about and of they suited my taste without getting a ton of spoilers on the way
Therefore, my reviews are not supposed to be detailed summaries of the plot or super in-depth analyses.
Rather, you can imagine meeting me for a coffee and asking me what I thought about a certain book or book series and whether I would recommend it. I would give you a brief glimpse on what the book is about, what I thought about the general vibe and whether I was satisfied with it. I would try to pique your curiosity without giving too much away and without running my mouth for too long and bore you out of your mind (ᵕ⸝⸝• ᴗ •)
That is why each review is a quick read with the most important facts, a vibe check and some brief and crisp recommendations.
If you're looking for very detailed content reviews of book series volume by volume, I would point you to the YouTuber duo Kictor. They talk about Danmei and other BL work and have a dedicated "Danmei Book Club" where they do very detailed reviews:
There are also others, of course. I have not checked out everything there is on YouTube and Instagram but I'm also always happy to receive suggestions!
First of all, let me start by telling you something very important: I only do reviews for books or book series that have been completely released as an official English translation.
For why I only do completed series, it's quite easy: I believe that knowing the whole story is important and many things can change as a story progresses. Sometimes, a story starts out great only to loose momentum later on. Sometimes the story seems average until the latter half really takes off. The ending of a great story can still feel disappointing or a surprising ending can positively change your view of the whole thing.
That is why I want to make sure to have read the entire main story, so that I can give you an accurate impression of how I perceived it from beginning to end.
If you want to know why I focus on official English releases, please visit:
The outline of my reviews is always going to be the same:
First, we start with some cold hard facts about who wrote the book, who published it, how many volumes it has, if it was adapted into something else (like a comic) and some more.
Then, I'm going to give you a synopsis of what the book is about with as little spoilers as possible. Some small spoilers of what happens right at the beginning are unavoidable but I'll make sure that I only include really necessary ones.
I will include a ranking from 1-5 stars based on how I liked it overall. Please note that this measure is highly subjective and you might very well have a different opinion. Along the general ranking, there will be a spice ranking from 1-5 flaming hot chili peppers based on how much *ahem* action there is between the characters (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
Next is a quick spoiler-free summary of things I liked vs. things I didn't like followed by some recommendations of who I think would enjoy this book vs. who I think would probably not enjoy it.
At the very end, there will always be a bonus: The moredetailed version of what I liked and disliked about the story containing spoilers. This section will be hidden by default, so you don't accidentially get your fun ruined by looking at something you shouldn't! I certainly wouldn't want that ( - ᴗ •́ )
This is a highly subjective metric based on how much I enjoyed the story and how deep an impression it left on me. You will best understand my opinion by reading the "What I liked" and "What I didn't like" sections. Take it as a general guideline and with a grain of salt. After all, it's always best to form your own opinion! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡
5 sparkling stars: Absolute top tier, definitely must-reads. This kind of book is what got me into Danmei and what keeps me here. It is inspiring, takes away my ability to sleep, work and function in general and makes me want to talk about it to everyone around me (whether they like it or not) ₍₍⚞(˶˃ ꒳ ˂˶)⚟⁾⁾
4 sparkling stars: Great story, nice characters and generally not much to criticize. Very memorable even though the story didn't go that last step to make it to the top ranking but still absolutely worth your time and strong recommendation from my side.
3 sparkling stars: Nice story, average good and worth reading if the vibe is what you're looking for. Has some flaws in terms of story and characters but still an enjoyable experience.
2 sparkling stars: The story has its own strong suits and appealing points but also some serious issues with pacing and consistency. I would generally not recommend this unless there is a specific reason you want to read this.
1 sparkling star: I would be surprised to ever give this ranking (but it's not impossible). There isn't much good to say about the story, so it's generally not worth your time if you have anything else available that will give you a better experience.
This rating should tell you, how intensely the characters interact with each other (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
Ok, now being serious: Some don't like it spicy and some do while others like it sometimes depending on their mood. This is supposed to be a guideline of how much spice/explicitness you can expect in a story.
5 flaming hot chili peppers: Extremely horny. The story is laced with erotic tension and contains many long and very detailed explicit scenes. Looking for a sex scene spanning several chapters? This is the place for you! ╰(🔥ᗝ🔥)╯
4 flaming hot chili peppers: Very horny. The story contains a decent amount of erotic tension and longing with frequent explicit scenes that are still fairy detailed but less so and also not as long as in the 5 chilies case.
3 flaming hot chili peppers: moderately horny. The story is mostly focused on the romantic aspect of the character's relationship. However, there are still some passionate scenes that mostly don't go as far as describing things in a super detailed way but still get the point across.
2 flaming hot chili peppers: Not very horny. Kissing and hand-holding occur. If anything more happens in the story, the author will only hint at it and leave the rest to your imagination.
1 flaming hot chili pepper: They might hold hands and kiss after 5 volumes. Slow burn, romantic tension but nothing really in the way of explicit intimacy.

She is responsible for the cute sparkling star and flaming chili pepper gifs for all the rankings in the book reviews. I am always deeply impressed how she can whip up great illustrations and sometimes even comics with just a few strokes on her tablet!
Thanks so much LinLin, I love you!
