Shen Yuan is a pretty normal guy who likes webnovels. One could say he likes good webnovels, but then there is his latest read: Proud Immortal Demon Way, a trashy male power fantasy novel in which the shamelessly overpowered protagonist Luo Binghe kicks everyone's ass and adds every women he comes across into his harem. That kind of story...
And even though Shen Yuan finds the story incredibly bad and keeps roasting it under his username Peerless Cucumber, he still can't help reading every new chapter until finally, the story comes to an end.
And Shen Yuan is outraged! Such a terrible ending, so distressing, simply unbearable! And so, Shen Yuan is so upset that he kicks the bucket right then and there \(”˚☐˚)/
But this is just the beginning! Because he wakes up... In the same bad story that killed him. And not just as a random side character or the protagonist, no! He has become the scum villain Shen Qingqiu that every reader including himself hated and who is destined to die the most gruesome possible death to satisfy the protagonist's (and the readers') thirst for revenge.
After collecting himself, he is prepared to just turn things around by being nice to Luo Binghe and avoid his preordained fate. But wrong! Because he is haunted by an incorporeal voice called "the system" that has the power to reward and punish him. And he has to play the role the story outlined for him. Otherwise, the penalty is... Death!
And so, newly reincarnated Shen Qingqiu has to balance the badass villain act with not being hated by the protagonist, all while cussing out the author, his terrible world building and the stupidity of his characters in the most creative ways.
So preoccupied, he is unaware that the protagonist, Luo Binghe, not only doesn't hate him but instead starts to harbor some unspeakable affections towards him... (˵ ¬ᴗ¬˵)
Generally, most of the story does not have any explicit scenes or strong sexual tension. At most, they kiss a few times and that is that.
However, there is one (!) very explicit scene right at the end of the main story and also some of the extras contain explicit scenes, so be warned!
What I enjoyed the most was of course the humor! I believe that this is also what most fans appreciate about it by far.
It is supposed to be a comedy/parody on Xianxia and transmigration and it really does an excellent job at it. If you are familiar with those genres, you will definitely have a good, hearty laugh! I was on vacation with my mom while reading this and she kept asking me what was so funny. I read some passages out loud for her, fully expecting a laugh. But she just got this confused look on her face, not getting the joke... (ᵕ—ᴗ—)
What carries the whole story in my opinion, is the main character Shen Qingqiu. He has sharp eyes and an even sharper tongue. He always pointedly disses everyone and everything around him both in his internal monologue and out loud to their faces.
Like, aren't these girls cold when their clothes are torn to shreds in a fight? Why are all those kids so stupid? No wonder they all get killed later in the story! And most importantly: why is that shitty system with the cheap voice always trying to scam him?!!?
It is also very funny how Shen Qingqiu has a detached, third person view on all that happens around him which leads to misunderstandings more than once.
The story generally progresses naturally and has some surprises in store as well! Besides the main characters Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe, there are also some other lovable, funny and interesting side characters.
Finally, I need to mention that the more lighthearted, comedic tone of the story starts gradually changing into a more serious one in the latter half on the story when the characters' backgrounds and emotions come into focus. I really liked the intention of the author to make the story more meaningful and give it more emotional impact beyond the entertainment value of a pure comedy.
As I mentioned before, the tone of the story changes later on to become more serious and to explore the emotions and backstories of the most important characters.
While I think the idea is great and I always find stories with more emotional depth more impactful and memorable, the transition was not that well executed in the end.
What I mean is that while shedding light on the characters' emotions, there are many things left unsaid that would be important for a throughout resolution of the conflicts that were set up.
There were a few heart-to-hearts missing that should have been there and more self-reflection to be done by some characters. Furthermore, the story gets slightly confusing at the very end, making it seem as if the author struggled a bit to tie up all the story lines.
Also, the story is generally not explicit at all but then there is this super explicit scene at the very end that is basically shoved in the reader's face very suddenly! It bothered me because it kind of breaks with the rest of the story.
All in all, it makes a lot of sense considering that this is Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's first work and that she was in high school when she wrote it! For a high school student, writing something like this is a remarkable feat and you can already see how her talent for writing will mature and improve in her later works!
You are familiar with the Xianxia and Transmigration (Isekai) genres: Optionally also if you are a bit familiar with Japanese pop-culture. Then, you will be fully able to understand the humor which is the main selling point of this book.
You are a fan of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu: This was her first work and from here, you can clearly see how she improved in her later works. Especially concerning the emotional depth and conflict resolution that was a bit lacking here (in my opinion).
You want to read something funny: If this is your type of humor, you'll have a blast (˶>⩊<˶)
You don't mind the story becoming a bit confusing later on: I think you can overlook that part in favor of the positive aspects.
You have never read or watched something that is Transmigration, Isekai or Xianxia: You will not understand the jokes and just be confused. It's best to read this when you already know a little more about those genres.
You are just getting started with Danmei and are looking for your first book to read (or one of the first): This is maybe not a good point to start your journey. I would instead recommend The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and Heaven Official's Blessing, both written by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu, to first-time/new readers.
You don't enjoy comedies or parodies: Then clearly, this is not for you.
You strongly dislike it when a story has confusing parts, especially at the end: You may want to skip this one then.
Shang Qinghua! He is a fan favorite in general and boy, I loved that the infamous author Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky was reincarnated into his own novel. And as an insignificant side character to boot. Poor guy had to work his ass off just to survive in the shitty stallion novel he himself wrote, regretting not having written it better at almost every step. His wish is fulfilled at the end though! ヾ(˵☆□☆˵)و
His banter with his "Cucumber Bro" Shen Qingqiu is also first class! Here is my favorite example: "'The stallion novel protagonist you wrote turned gay,' said Shen Qingqiu. 'Shouldn't you be angry?' 'It doesn't matter,' Shang Qinghua said sincerely. 'Either way, the one he's got his eye on isn't me.' Shen Qingqiu gave him a cordial middle finger, then looked back down to polish his sword." - From Volume 3 of The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Shen Qingqiu's relationship with the Bai Zhan peak lord Liu Qingge, his Shidi. Their love-hate relationship is also something that I found enjoyable every second!
I liked Shen Qingqiu's (the original flavor's (˶•̀ ᎑-˶)) backstory. It was very consistent and shed light on his complicated relationship with the sect leader, his childhood friend.
I think it was generally a good call to have the final arc involving Tianlang-Jun and Zhuzhi-Lang. It shed light onto Luo Binghe's familiy history and gave him the chance to deal with his complicated childhood trauma. Technically, it was also a chance for him to bond with Shen Qingqiu and to resolve their past misunderstandings but that didn't really happen, or at least not as much as I would have wished for.
Generally, Zhuzhi-Lang was a character that I bonded with a lot. He is torn between his eagerness to repay Shen Qingqiu's kindness and his loyalty towards Tianlang-Jun. In the end, he chooses to be loyal until death. Even though his death is sad, I kind of expected it and found it a befitting end for such a torn, wavering character. I really appreciated the extra that narrated Tianlang-Jun's story with Luo Binghe's mother from Zhuzhi-Lang's perspective. It gave me more of a character whom I liked but who had a comparatively short time on screen.
Finally, let me grace you with my absolutely favorite quote that I think really embodies the book's spirit: "What could be more absurd than discovering that the person from whom you'd exhaustively plotted to flee, and had indeed fled from for so many years, hadn't actually wanted to kill you at all but wanted to do you instead? Though whether the desire was to kill or to fuck, the result was the same: Shen Qingqiu would still run away with all his might." - From Volume 2 of The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
First of all, why did Gongyi Xiao have to die. Why?!!? \(”˚☐˚)/
He was a good guy, he got Shen Qingqiu out of the water prison. And I get it, he was not that important... But I liked him!
Regarding the original Shen Qingqiu's backstory: I mentioned before that I liked it, which I'm not going to take back at this point! However, what bothered me is that transmigrated Shen Qingqiu watched the whole thing as a spectator without being really involved. I would have wished that he had some kind of tether to the original's backstory, so that it would've had more of an impact on him beyond just thinking: "Oh, this guy had a tragic past and that's the reason he became the scum villain later."
Maybe there could've been a similarity to something that happened in the transmigrated Shen Qingqiu's past and that would be the reason why he was chosen by the system to enter this character specifically? Also, I think there should've been a proper heart-to-heart between him and his sect leader Shixiong. I mean: "I understand, let's not talk about the past anymore" is not enough! (╥﹏╥)
Speaking of hear-to-hearts, the one I was missing most was one between our two main boys! I mean, it is clear that their communication is terrible and basically non-existent, especially after Shen Qingqiu pushes Luo Binghe into the abyss.
That is the central conflict the story that their relationship revolves around because Shen Qingqiu's judgement is clouded by the strong preconceptions he has from knowing the original story and Luo Binghe is terrified of being rejected. But in the end, we only get some more implicit clearing up but no in-depth direct talk about their feelings. Which would really have been necessary after all that miscommunication!
And Mai Gu Ridge, oh Mai Gu Ridge! I get that Mo Xiang Tong Xiu wanted to write a horny scene but that... was a bit too much in my opinion. It was too sudden and too explicit. Don't get me wrong, we like some nice smut (at least I do) but the way it was written didn't quite fit the tone of the rest of the story. There should've been some more build-up. And I get it, "This master knows. This master was willing." But still, that was too harsh on Shen Qingqiu!
Finally, I want to close with the fact that I didn't really like Tianlang-Jun. Too domineering, stubborn and ruthless. And I mean, it's justified that he would be like that in the beginning because he was betrayed and imprisoned by the woman he loved and now only wants revenge. However, we don't really get much development from him before he kicks the bucket in the end which is unfortunate. He is a character who had a ton of wasted potential on being deep and multi-faceted.
